M3 Mirrors on my E92 --- ALMOST! (help?)

Hey guys,

I need some help with getting M3 mirrors to work on my 2009 E92 335i.

I did some research before purchasing the E93 M3 mirrors, and basically found that as long as the new mirrors and my old mirrors have the same # of pins, the M3 mirrors should work.
The new M3 mirrors have 3 pins and my current mirrors have 3 pins.
So I went to install them yesterday.. and even though they fit and line up perfectly. I couldn't get them to power at all.

Now my E92 didn't come with many options. I don't have the folding or heated options.
The absolute ONLY 2 things that my oem mirrors do, is that they are powered (can control both mirrors movement from the switch on drivers door panel) and that the passenger side mirror folds down in reverse.

The E93 mirrors I purchased, do not have the folding option either. The only options they have are heated and memory.

I don't care to be able to use those options. The only thing I care for is that I can control from the drivers side switch and that they tilt down in reverse.

Is this something that coding will help? or do I need to find even more basic M3 mirrors? lol

OK, I did the M3 mirror retrofit on my 09' E92. My car had:
  • Powered
  • Heated
  • Non Auto-Dim (blue mirror glass)
  • Non Power Fold

I bought new OEM BMW M3 mirrors with the Base configuration - which is only Heated & Memory as the ones you got.

When the mirrors arrived, I saw that they had the correct amount of pins as my car - thought I was all set to go - no dice. Mirrors installed fine, but didn't operate at all.

What I found out I had to do was:
  1. Remove the Memory Mirror Motor & Harness from the new mirrors
  2. Swap in my old Non-Memory Mirror Motors & Harness

The wiring was different to the motors between Memory & non Memory versions. It's not a hard swap to do - hardest part is routing the harness thru the mirror hsg/stem - but it is definitely possible.

Once I had my old mirror motors/harnesses in both new M3 mirror housings - they worked as they should.

Your tilt upon reverse should work then also. The only reason it's not working now is due to incompatibility between the motors, you have no operation at all...

Your new mirrors are also heated, but that has nothing to do with the operation of the glass. Heated glass uses additional wire to hook up to glass for heating. Since your car doesn't have that option, you just won't be hooking up anything to backside of the glass. No effect on other operation..

Thats what I was thinking I may have to do..

Would you be able to comment on how easy/difficult it is to take apart both mirror housings? as well as how to open them up?

Any cutting/splicing necessary to remove the wiring/harnesses out of each mirror?

You won't have to take the housing apart, just have the covers off (Items #2).

Obviously, you will be removing/installing motor (Item #6) which attaches with Item #9 Screw and a couple clips.

The wiring harness (Item #7) will come from motor, follow a path thru the housing, then got thru a hole in the stem @ base of housing to the circular connector that is located in the triangle part of the mirror (where your car wiring harness plugs in to).

The wire can & will go thru the hole in the stem both for removal & install without having to cut any wires.

Just make sure you remember how the wires are routed as you take them out so as to put yours back the same way.

It truly isn't hard at all, once you look at your mirrors with the covers off you will be able to tell...

And BTW, just put the M3 motors & harness back in your old mirrors - you can then sell your old mirrors with no problem - they will work for any car that needs/wants memory mirrors.

I sold my old mirrors with the new motors for a good price to a member that wanted the E92 style instead of 'dumbo' style. He was very happy with them. As long as the buyer knows what he has - and your old mirrors match - you're golden.

You are awesome! Thank you so much!

Does the mirror itself need to be taken off its mount? And do the mirror covers (item 2) come off if I just pull them? or is there a technique to taking them off?

I'll post up once I get to try it, probably not till the next warm weekend though... lol

No, the mirror housing frame (Item #4), the housing itself that the motor screws on to, & the triangle mount do not need to be taken apart at all - they will remain together thru the operation.

The covers simply snap off the housings (they have a couple clips that hold them on). If you push them off from front edge away from the front frame they will come off rather easily - just be careful when doing this so you don't break any clips. They are made to come On & Off though so you should be able to handle no problem...

I should have taken pics when I did the install - it's been a while & I don't remember the exact steps - but pretty much as I explained. If I had one setting in front of me I could do it again with no problem.

All you need to do is look how the motor is attached, and the wiring harness routing - it should be pretty much self evident at that point.

So i managed to get the cover off one of the m3 mirror housings.

Item #6, is that the round black thing with white sticker on it, in the middle?

What you see there is part of the wiring harness. It contains the electronics for the mirror motor (memory functions, etc.) it will need to be removed also.

Note: before you do any of this - post up a pic of your old mirrors looking at the back just like the pic you posted of the M3 & I can verify the steps

But 1st:
  1. Do following steps to one mirror at a time so no confusion & so you have one for reference
  2. Turn mirror over so you are looking @ glass
  3. Push on glass with hand on inside edge (closest to car) to manually tilt glass IN
  4. Get you fingers under the edge of glass on outer tip and gently pop off glass
  5. You will then see the motor that the glass attaches to-it's the black round thingy in center
  6. Remove the (1) phillips head center bolt & the motor should come out
  7. Turn mirror back over as in your pic
  8. Gently pry each of the (3) clear plastic tabs out & away from the studs in the mirror housing and the electronics connector will come off
  9. Look at side of mirror mounting triangle that goes toward car & you will see the round rubber/plastic thingy with the electrical connector/pins inside
  10. Pull that rubber/plastic thingy out of the mirror & remove electrical connector with pins from the rubber
  11. You should then just have the purple/red/brown wires connected to the 3 pin connector hanging there - you will need to push this back thru the mirror stem whilst pulling gently on the wires from the mirror motor side till the connector/wires are out of the stem
  12. You said these were NOT folding mirrors - but the yellow & white wires from the round electronic connector ARE going to what appears to be a power fold motor that is present-so they must be power fold.
  13. Since you don't care about the power fold, I'm guessing (not 100% sure) that you will OK to cut the yellow & white wires to be able to remove the wiring harness (unless you look and there is a connector on the end going into the power fold mirror (IDK as my mirrors did not have this option) If there is a connector, just unplug it (better option over cutting) and then the entire wiring harness is free of the mirror. Again I'm not 100% sure about these wires as I did not have them on either set of mirrors during my retrofit - but I do know that they will need to be disconnected to enable harness removal.

To re-install your motor/harness:
  1. Obviously you will have to do the exact same steps on your old mirrors to remove motor & harness-do one side at a time so as not to get confused & so you have something to look at for reference
  2. Install your old motor from mirror glass side with center screw-there should be contacts on motor that line up & plug into the electronics module from the backside-this contact area should line up with a square hole in the housing so that it shows thru when looking from backside of mirror as in your pic
  3. Push your old wiring harness connector with pins into the stem hole from mirror side & work it thru the stem till it sticks out other side & then gently pull it the rest of way thru
  4. Route wires as they were on original harness and clip your old electronics back into the housing-making sure to line up the electrical connector on backside of the electronics module with the connector on the motor that is showing thru the housing
  5. Pop glass back onto motor by lining up & gently press in center till you here/feel it click in place
  6. Install connector with pins from your old wiring harness that you just installed in to the rubber/plastic thingy-look at mirror you haven't done yet to make sure connector is installed correctly (it might only go one way to lock into the rubber thingy I don't remember)
  7. Push rubber/plastic thingy back in to mirror housing-look at mirror you haven't done yet to make sure of the clocking position of the rubber thingy (it might only go in one way but I don't remember)
  8. At this point, before you install the mirror to the car, plug the car wiring harness into the mirror as you would normally & test to make sure the mirror is working
  9. If so, you can then go forward and bolt mirror in to place
  10. Repeat all this crap for the other side & you will be done

This is hard to describe without showing you pics of each step-I could do this for you in about 15min/side if you were local...

If you run into trouble, post up & take pics of where you are at & I can describe better for you. I don't have a set of mirrors laying around to take pics for you. I'm home most of day & will keep checking to see how it's going

I searched the forum & the net, but couldn't find a DIY showing this for E9x mirrors

It's really not that difficult - just looks like a lot when you have to try and write it all out

If the car you are putting the M3 mirrors on already has memory mirrors, the swap is direct bolt on without any of that foolin' around

BMW doesn't make it EZ to retrofit a lot of things

Yeah, my car has all mirror functions- memory, heat, dim, fold, etc.

The biggest thing with those damn mirrors from the M3 is.... $$$$$

Yes, you will have to follow the steps I posted above & swap out the mirror motors, the wiring harness, & controllers. Controllers are the round black items with the white sticker shown in your pics.

Don't bother trying to save time by only swapping the harness & controller - the backside of the controller has pins that mate to socket in the mirror motor & are specific. Your old controller you will be using in the M3 mirrors will not mate correctly to the M3 mirror motors - so the motors must be swapped also.

Again, it appears the separate yellow & white wires are going to power fold motor on your M3 mirrors - your controller will not support this.

Since you said you don't care about having power fold - either unplug those wires from the motor (if possible) or cut them, to be able to remove the M3 controllers. You will not be hooking up the yellow & white wires to your old controllers as they do not support this function...

1QwikWS6, you were right, once i have them both opened up and got a chance to look at them, it was much easier and fairly self explanatory.

However I did need your writeup in how to take apart the plugs n stuff.

I got the driver side done, seems to work well. And then somehow my battery managed to die (car's been sitting for the past 2 weeks, and even before that, it kept showing low charge on the idrive) and on top of that it's been pouring outside.

Hopefully tomorrow i can get the pass side done.

Bodyshop finished painting the m3 mirror covers for me, so looking fresh.
Will post up pics once everythings completed.

That's a sign that the auto dim mirror glass is shot

There is a liquid inside the glass that makes the mirror dim & then go back to clear upon application of electricity - same as your rearview mirror (when those go bad you need to replace ASAP as the liquid will eventually leak out onto your dash/console and mark it permanently).

The seller had to know the glass on this side was no good - kinda coincidental that it 'just happened' when you installed

You would be better off just buying the plain non auto dim blue tinted mirror glass at this point since you aren't using the auto dim function anyway.

They are less expensive & you'll never have the problem again. That's what I have in my M3 mirrors...
