Replaced my RFT five times in 18 mths
Hey Folks,
So I've now replaced my front pass. RFT five times in the past 18 mths. This is only about 15 months of driving since I had winters on for three of those 18 months. I've got the wheel / tire ins, so it isn't costing me anything but time. This last front pass tire lasted the longest at five months. I gotta say in general i'm very unimpressed with the quality of the RFT. At what point do you make the dealer replace the rims? That might be the problem, but then again, it might not be. The other RFT have been ok, I've only had to replace one other tire location (rear driver side). - SR |

May I suggest steering around the potholes instead of driving through them....
I have no issues with them....

Since you don't say why they were replaced, it's hard to agree with your assessment.

NYC must eat RFTs since 5 tires in 18 mos is absurd. No problems with mine & I don't live in the most well maintained of road networks. In 14 years I can recall only my wife having to deal with a tire change.
I would say that sooner or later BMW is going to replace that rim since this routine needs to end. Surely a cause of grief for them. Anyway, I say feel smug you have the insurance and either plan to switch out of the RFTs or the car after you are no longer under the coverage. Good luck.

30k miles here, and not a single instance of tire damage

Fuck runflats... I've already replaced a rear tire due to a screw puncture in the sidewall, now my front tire bubbled up and I'm buying regular non-rft tires. Shitiest tires ever.

Well most of you guys don't know what it's like to drive in/around the Tri-State area so I'd suggest cutting him some slack...the roads here fucking suck. We have to deal with a lot of shit you guys don't. I've replace two tires (front passenger, and rear passenger) in 9000 mi of driving.

1, The BMW OEM RFTs SUCK!
2. When you replace a BME OEM RFT with another BMW OEM RFT you will still have a tire that SUCKS!. Logical conslusion: When you replace something that sucks with an identical something that sucks you end up with something that sucks. Solution: DITCH THE POS RFTs. It will totally transform the car. I also live in NYC (Manhattan - Upper East Side). I purchased the car in Palm Beach Florida - the RFTs wre fine in South Florida. I shipped the car to NYC at 1500 miles. I ditched the RFTs after two weeks in NYC and have not looked back since. CA

When I bought the car and heard all the complaints with the RFT I was prepared for the worse. I have 18" summer performance tires and figure they were not going to last long. I lost one due to a cut side wall but that could have happen on any tire. I currently have 23K on the tires and still have 50% tread life so they are holding up pretty well. I do not smoke them or squeal them into turns but I am not easy on them either.
I too have one with a bulge in it, on the right front, however, i hit a few nasty holes in the road. I am not sure why some people go through them so fast and others do not have problem. I also heard people complain about road noise from them. I figured that one out, the have lots of noise on concrete groved road surfaces and very little on normal asphalt roads so road surfaces makes a big difference with these tires. I had my car delivered to Huntingon Long Island. The night it was delivered I drove it from Huntington to Manhattan, As soon as I got it on the FDR I knew I had mad a big mistake. I was totally prepared to get rid of the car until someone here on Bimmerpost suggested I get rid of the RFTs. I replaced them the next week with Pirelli P_Zero Nero M&S. It made a HUGE difference. THe car went from being unbearable on the FDR to being crappy on the FDR. I don't think anu vehicle other than an Army Tank can tame the FDR.

That picture was taken on the Triboro Bridge before you enter the FDR Drive. Once you cross the East River and enter Manhattan the FDR Drive is totally chewed up. It remains that way until you get to the tunnel under Gracie Mansion (about 92nd Street), It is then relatively smooth until 71st Street which is where I generally exit,
