Chrome Is The Enemy
Since my car has the Brushed Aluminum Trim, I thought that the Shiny Chrome pieces on my stock Sport steering wheel looked a little out of place. So when I did the "M" Steering wheel Paddle mod, I decided to go ahead and Scotch-Brite the Chrome trim accents. Link:http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122287
When done carefully taking care not to sand through the Chrome finish while sanding in ONE direction, you can get a nice "Brushed Aluminum Look" using an inexpensive green "Scotch-Brite Pad". I been doing this for years on my Cars & Bikes with good results. Just Thought I'd share. I also decided to Scotch-Brite the Chrome trim accents, including the Shift knob / i-Drive knob / Door handles / Seat belt brackets & Kidney grills... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Before, door handle in chrome. ![]() After / Brushed Aluminum look w/ Scotch-Brite Pad ![]() ![]() Now the Door Handles, Steering Wheel, Shift knob & i-Drive knob all match the Factory Brushed Aluminum Trim. ![]() Before / Rt. side Stock Chrome Kidney Grill. ![]() After...Lft. side ![]() Side by Side. ![]() On the car... ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks great though. I might have to do this.

From Chrome to Brushed using Scotch Brite

DISCLAIMER: DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you can find an old piece of metal or plastic plated chrome (like a chromed license tag frame, chrome picture frame, even a chrome toilet paper holder, the spring loaded part that goes through the toilet paper & so on...) it would be a good idea to practice and get the technique down before moving on to your project! It just takes a little patience & practice and in no time you'll be a pro. ![]() ![]() Green Scotch-Brite Pad & Nortons Yellow 3X ultra-fine 320 grit sanding pad. You can pick these up at any hardware or Home improvement store. With plastic parts like the front Grill, you'll need to be careful not to sand through the Chrome coating (especially on the sharp corners you can go through easily) since it's not as thick as the chrome on metal pieces. Just start at an inconspicuous place rubbing gently trying not to stay in one place too long. If your using the Scotch-Brite Pads be sure to sand in one direction so you'll get that brushed look. It your going for more of a muted look w/out the brush marks, I'd recommend a 1/4" foam sanding pad like Nortons Yellow 3X ultra-fine 320 grit(pictured below next to the Scotch-Brite Pad). With this method, your less likely to sand though the Chrome since it'd finer. You may even want to go with a 200 grit for faster results. ![]() My G35 Grill I did 4 years ago. It still looked good when I traded it last June, so lightly sanding the gloss/sheen off the Chrome shouldn't have any long term effects. ![]() Just got my TRANSFORMER Tag (My Kids idea, since I have an E93) and did the chrome license plate frame, the camera flash makes it look shinier than it really is. Now I need to do the "335i" emblem, then maybe the Roundels...It never ends! ![]()
