will the 135 rear differential be one-piece?
After doing some research online, it appears newer rear differentials in the 335i are one piece. The ring gear can't be unbolted for installation of an aftermarket limited slip differential. If it really is one piece.. installing a mechanical rear lsd will be VERY expensive. I get the feeling bmw will not offer rear lsd's as an option because it leaves the 135i with a major performance handicap that will prevent it from embarrassing the M3.
I guess I'll wait and see if the 135i really comes with a one-piece differential. If true, I won't order one. Coming from an awd car there's no way I'll sell it for a rear drive car with electronic differential. I wonder if the entire rear axle could be retrofitted from an older M3? http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...=100-100-00008 http://www.activeautowerke.com/drive...92335/main.php |

It sounds like bmw finally realized the profit margin on performance upgrades is (likely) higher than new car sales. Assuming the test drive goes OK, I will definitely get the 135i with a dealer installed lsd.. bmw oem software upgrade would also be a dream come true. Thanks!!! |

Thanks for the kind welcome wagon post with the requisite "search the archives" comment. I just went to my bmw dealer and they do not know of a dealer installed optional lsd for 335i, or anything abou the 135i. I did get a copy of the bmw performance brochure. I'll keep checking in with them and hope for the best. I also test drove a 335i to get a feel for the power.

if your dealer knows nothing about the 135i find a new dealer. they should have at the lest the brochure and base pricing. |

?? Moot, because you don't need an aftermarket LSD in the future. BMW will offer it out of THEIR Performance catalogue and installed at the dealership! If you dealership has no knowledge of this.. then ask them why they don't read their own Roundel magazine or the news briefs! |

You may have already seen this pic in another thread, but it certainly pertains to this one too. This is the diff on the 135i, and pretty much answers the topic of this thread:

if the 1er has a welded dif, they wouldn't that make it that much more difficult to offer a dealer installed optional LSD? That makes me think it won't be welded - for ease of installing their own upgrade.

+1 - at that price you'd think it was hand-carved out of a single billet of 'unobtainium'.

the 1er has potential but if the diff is welded and an upgrade its the same as the 335 im gonna be disappointed. thats a pretty expansive upgrade for a part that should be installed on a car with that kinda power. I have to say its pretty said bmw didnt relize this and if there doin it for the aftermarket profits that sux.

Does this replacement diff use the same final drive ratio as OE? Or, is there an option for a numerically higher final drive?

I dont think thats the reason behind it as BMW has had the Ediff for such a long time.. its worked for them for some time so i can imagine changing directions would be an expensive venture, amoung other reasons.. I just hope it doesnt cost too much.. |

I agree with the post regarding the dealers installing the entire lsd rear end as a unit. The only problem is the original welded ring gear means the original won't be usable as a core, which leads me to believe it will cost at least $3k, probably closer to $4k. IF they swap in the entire rear as a unit, it would be very easy for bmw to provide a better gear ratio.
