Brilliant info guys, thank you!
Following my recent issue (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=594848) I decided to show the car some love and so she's booked in to have the Alpine kit installed on Tuesday and I can't wait. As usual Australia is an rip-off and it's costing me $1,700 including installation and GST but I reckon I'll be feeling the love again afterwards. A very expensive happy ending. Have to say though, I am tempted to replace the subs under the seat with BSW's offerings, not sure if anyone has seen or heard them in action?....

Wow guys, got all the pieces and brought them into Valencia BMW to see about getting them installed...they quoted $980 which includes 7 hours of labor and 2 hours for coding. I went back and forth with the lady and she insisted each door panel takes over an hour to remove. I can't believe these are actual BMW technicians.
Coding alone costs $280. For that price I'll do it myself, still don't want to pay $280 to code though... |

Why bother getting the Alpine upgrade when you can get great sound without too much trouble and cost. Buy a JL Audio xd600/6 amp, get a Quad Lock connector for the HU (or reuse your existing one) and run a 9 conductor cable from HU to the AMP. Then run 6 channels from the amp to your brand new front, subs and rear speakers.
I'm over simplifying but it can be done for a little more than the Alpine upgrade. Especially if you do it yourself. You do need to get the HU reprogramed to HiFi. |

Yes, you are. For one thing, many US-spec Pro CD HUs won't recode to HiFi. Not sure how many of those went to other countries.
Secondly, many of the aftermarket Quadlock connectors won't hold MOST cables if your HU does support 6FL or FN, Bluetooth, ASSIST, or a CD changer. But other than the oversimplification, you are 100% correct that you can get better results going other directions, and based on that price in AUS, for similar cash. |

Has anyone in the US completed this with success? Would love to hear how the US dealers handled the install, non-US equipment. Specifically anyone in SoCal or nearby.

Hi great thread! New owner and very excited to find this upgrade to the base “stereo system” for my newly purchased 2011 135 (10/4 build). Getting ready to order my Alpine kit and corner moldings from Schmiedmann and was wondering if anyone who has done the upgrade can confirm the foam rubber inserts for the tweeters where already in your doors behind the blank panels? I see on Realoem the foam rubber “seals”, parts numbers 51337199589 and 51337199590 and was wondering if these should be ordered as well? Appreciate any feedback.
Really enjoying 1addicts and all the great information!!! Loving the 135 as well Thanks - Chris |

They were already in my car. They're there as sound insulation - even without the tweeters.

My car is built on 4/08 so I'd assume I should get the pre 3/09 kit? Only reason I say that is because Bimmer-Bob says how obviously all US cars will get the from 3/09 kit... If I get the pre 3/09 kit, that wouldn't require me to get my car programmed? Has anyone else got the pre 3/09 kit?
I hope this kit would make the stereo sound like my 06 330xi. I'm not sure if it's the HiFi system or what but it sounds much better then my 1 Thanks |

The reason I said that all US cars would need the From-3/09 kit is that BMW wasn't putting the base Stereo system in US cars before that. The base system at launch was the HiFi system, with which the OEM/Alpine upgrade kit is incompatible.

Just picked up the car where it received the Alpine "audio upgrade".
I am not sure the dealer did this correctly. It sounds overly tinny / peaky from the front speakers (compared to the back) & the base is pretty much over powering every thing else. Reading the responses here and over on E90 it sounds like the head unit was never updated or coded to Hifi? Is there anyway for me to verify this by looking at the Idrive menu? Do the tone settings change?
