On our Stelvio trip 1addicts member: Swadeness had these sweet Performance wheels on his 135i. Whats cool is he got the Perf wheels for an e46 so they have a more aggressive offset to the wheels. fronts are 1/2 inch wider at 8"s while the rears are 8.5"s. He is running 235's in front and 255's in the rear. No rubbing either. Plus the e46 wheels were some $200 less than the 135i ones! lol
Btw... he told me that TireRack also said this combo would not work.... but they were wrong. Its an aggressive setup that works well. Looks great IMO too.

You can get those same wheels in 1 offsets, but unfortunately they do not come in the right width for those tires. Such a stupid shame they didn't give us 3 series offsets to begin with.

My 225/255's are mounted on my OE M-Sport wheels: 7.5jx18 and 8.5jx18. Like I said in my original post here... the 255's really need to be mounted on a 9j wheel... but its only 10mm wider... and so many people run this 255 tire on the factory 8.5j rear wheel. They work - but technically should not. I guess it also depends on the tire brand... bc some tires are larger than their technical stamped size on the sidewall. I've seen lot of German 1er's run this e46 offset Performance wheels. I think they look good. Dack

Yep, as Dack mentioned I'm running the 235s in front and 255s in back with no issues. I'm running the style 269's with the E46 offset, and as an even further bonus the E46 wheels are just a tiny bit lighter than the 1er's. Here are the specifics:
Front: 8 x 18 ET 47 with 235/40 Michelin PSS Rear: 8.5 x 18 ET 50 with 255/35 MIchelin PSS Link for some great info on BMW wheels: http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/ And part numbers are here: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...subcat1=138715

Hello Dack,
I've taken your sage advice and ditched the RFs and went w/ the 225/255 setup. Just got the car back tonight after being on vacation and have only had a chance to put 15 miles on her. I did not experience any tire rub. The PSS stick like bubblegum to hot pavement and the ride is much, much better. Thank you! I do have a question though. What tire pressures are you running them at? I realize that everyone has different opinions on that, but I'm kind of looking for a baseline to start. The slightly wider tire w/o the run-flat option will probably change suggested tire pressures would it not? Thanks again, Regards, Al .

2.3 Bar up front and 2.8 Bar in back. Maybe drop those pressures by 0.3 Bar for slow-er driving. Dack

My invoice from the TR says 255's will fit 7.50-9.00. That seems like a large range but here is the invoice. Love the tires and I'll probably drive the car more now because of them. Regards, Al

Spare M Sport 18"x 7.5"
I have a spare M Sport front 18" wheel that I would like to use as a spare wheel on long trips (goo on the city trips) when I switch from run-craps to Michelin PS3 225/255. I'll put a 225 on the spare. Am I right in assuming that will fit on the rear if I get a flat on a rear?

Btw... after my flat tire last weekend. I am dumping my alloy spare for a full size spare tire. I decided to order a 7jx17 steel wheel from an e46 330i. It has a ET of 48 which is a perfect fit for our 1er's. And I will mount a 205/55HR17 tire on it - so I won't be limited to only 80 kph like with my space saver. Besides that space saver was kind of scary when you would change lanes or do anything but drive straight. Nein Danke.

Lifting Jack Kit
Just bought the BMW Lifting Car Jack Kit Part No. 71102182448 (same product as 71106773536 ex BavAuto.com) from bmw_direct on eBay (genuine BMW) for £116.95 (included £2.95 P&P into London address). Great vendor.
Next step the tyres.

Hey Dack,
one question, does your car registration doc (sorry dont know the technical name in German) comes with 225/40R18 for front and 255/35R18 on the back? Mine only allows 215/40R18 and 245/35R18!! no problem in German to fit tire dimensions not indicated in the vehicle registration card? I need to buy my Non RFT and its not easy to get the dimensions indicated. 215 its to forget... i will go for 225 245 its also dificult as more options are available with 255 |

Even though I have German plates... my registration is thru the US Army(I am a American)... so we are exempt from German TUV (process) and all. We don't have to go thru the same rules as regular Germans do. So that is how I can run those larger tire sizes legally. So no, my car's papers do not specify what tire sizes, like German car papers would normally state. When I ordered my 225/255 PS3's at my German tire dealer.... at first they said it was not allowed. Then they see that the car papers is thru the military and they say: Ok. You could go with 225/245's and be fine for Germany. I think the guys in the 1er forum have found a way with the TUV to get that approved. Dack

heheheheh.....
you are the man...kekekekek.... otherwise you show them the 9mm and all is setleed..... We can make the tire size ammendment also in Portugal throuh a similar institution of TUV.... just need to fit the new tires make a test in a closed circuit and they give me a paper with approval ... afterwords i ask DGV to modifie the papers....just like i did with the tinted windows ... only bad news is the 120 € this will cost.... but better than 250€ fine btw how many km/miles did you run with PS3 30k-40K?? thanks, |
