If M had produced this before the 135i or the 335i, I don't think anyone would be complaining about the engine. As it is, there's plenty of power for a M car, and the question has always been if it has the throttle response for a M car compare to the "iS" variants (the car is pretty much modified by M with a M-LSD, it deserves the letter M in its name).
If you look at the specs - it has the iS engine of the new Z4sDrive35iS. Interesting though, previous marketing for the Z4iS indicated that engine has been M tuned. My take is this - if ///M did touch the engine and give it a better response than the iS engine from the 335 (even though it's being used in the Z4), I think it probably "just" deserved to be called a 1M. Otherwise, I think this car should be called the 135M. This car has way more than what a iS would ever be, but I guess the question is, has it got the engine response to be a true M. There are really no concrete details on how this "M" tuned engine is different to the "iS" - I will reserve my judgement, but I really think this car should be a 135M, and not a 1M until they can tell us what they have done different apart from a flywheel swap.

For those who are comparing it to the M3... Well why don't u go buy a R35 GT-R. It's about the same $$ and crushes anything. But you won't, you'd rather get an M car cause of the fact that we want a quality drivers car. Not a plastic go fast playstation.

I love the style of this car. id take it over the 135i any day. BUT!!! Wheres the carbon fiber roof? the M side skirts that were talked about? the fender vents? Big FAIL there for BMW. they might as well close the vents on the front and rear bumper also. doesnt make any sence. the M3 mirrors i can deal with but they could have came up with something different for the 1M. wheres the coral red interior? would have been a big seller with the alpine white or black colors. nice car but very half assed.

My whole point is that the fundamental difference between M cars and their base counterparts is the M-Developed CHASSIS. Engine performance gains relative to their base counterparts vary from M-car to M-car. The handling however, is ALWAYS in a different league. POWER is easy to gain, and relatively inexpensive too on turbo engines. HANDLING is where the engineering prowess shows. And the added engineering complexity is the basis of what M-Division is here for first and foremost. So you are. let me simplify it for you a regular BMW can have a engine superior to its lower counterparts without being a M but it can't have a better chassis set up without being a M Last edited by techthentic; 12-10-2010 at 06:01 PM.. |

Rear end needs a make over . Sort of hacked off look of a 1996(?) 318ti.
Don't get me wrong 1addicts. I have a 2008 135i with Dinal tune and it is an absolute blast. I keep forgetting I'm 70 when I attempt a full power drift on the freeway onramps.. |

Have to admit the numbers are disappointing. For the price, just buy a cayman s, or used 911 for a bit more. This car seems to me to compete where Porsche has dominated for a long time, and it doesn't deliver. Heck, they look better, and weigh less too.

For the people who are dissapointed or hung up on the HP numbers of the M-tuned N54... I think you need to look back at what BMW did when they brought out the 335i in 2007. At that time BMW was still trying to sell (unload) the last of the e46 M3's. The last thing they needed was to tell everyone the new middle model of the 3er had almost as much HP and way more torque than the crown jewel - aka M3. So... BMW underated the 335i engine. 300 HP but it was more like 330 HP. The e46 M3 was 333 HP.
So... now we have this new 1M// 340 PS. BMW again finds itself in the uncomfortable position of having a M3 sibling with simular HP level. IF you were BMW what would you do/say? Do you really think the 1M// only has 340 PS ??? What about the overboost? I think... the 1M// has more HP than BMW wants to admit too right now. Only time will tell. And of course... the car track tests. WHY would BMW upgrade the flywheel and clutch? I Know lots of German tuners have told me that the 135i's standard clutch can only take up too 500 Nm. Same goes for the 135i's 6MT tranny. The 1M// is suppose to have 450 NM +50Nm with over boost. Do you really think that is all the power it has? Officially or not. I guess we all will have to wait to see. I did come across this interesting power chart of the 1M//.... I believe in the new 1M//... but what I believe is... that we have not been told the total truth when it comes to 1M vs the M3. In time we shall see. Dackel |

that may be, but the 13.2 second quarter mile time doesn't lie about the 335 hp figure |

Funny, if this engine has slightly larger turbos on it, then I think everyone here would immediately change their tune and the line would be a mile long.
