Without a real LSD to manage traction in the rear. Tight corners and a stiffer rear result in heavy loses of traction on the inside wheel. Having a thinner ARB in the rear puts more weight on the inside corner. Maximizing grip when an lad is not in play

Mine just crossed 35k and still loving it. For 32.5 (stickered at 34.4) it was a great buy. Bummed I missed out on year 1 book by a few weeks but I got a 2722 income tax deduction so I came to terms over the loss Typo in the article btw US bound production didn't start in DEC 2006, it was most certainly DEC 2007/JAN 2008 range. Cars began showing up in my area in March 2008. When mine is (very)old and tired I'll look for the latest model lowest mileage used one I can find and bring my checkbook. If my son is near driving age when this happens he may just luck out as time it does fly... Xenons are nice but don't last forever either and way more costly to fix than a halogen

That they do. I try not to think about what mine is worth because I don't plan on selling it anytime soon anyway.

Personal preference obviously, as the 128 is a very good car.

I test drove both and the power of the 135i ruled for me too. But my test drives were short, in Honolulu traffic, and both cars were autos (DCT in the 135i and trip in the 128i). A better test drive comparison would have been with manuals in both cars (which is what I wanted) and some back roads and highway driving along with the in town traffic. I think the 128i would have fared better in my eyes in this type of comparison. Probably still would have gone with the 135i though.

Also, some people may not want the turbo engine, so they would never consider it. The N52 is still a gem of an engine and it will be sad to see it go.

If i could have afforded a 135i, i realistically would have gone for it. but at 18 starting college and having to commute 40~ or so miles 5 days a week plus work on the weekends, a NA motor will be much more forgiving while still a lot of fun. I don't have to worry about turbo's, waste gate rattles, carbon build up or a lot of things with the NA motor. Plus i'm getting about 24 mpg no matter how i drive, flooring it down back roads or driving 80 on the highway. I like to make myself feel better by slowly setting it up for autocross where the lack of torque and overall power won't be AS big a deal as on a track.

3 model years, not many substantive changes and my exact build is exactly 2500 more on the sticker- wow! Actually hate the sport package wheels now maybe enough to get Msport with that M wheel that I'm opposed to both for feel and pandering. OK here's the whopper- I'm now convinced the X1 xdrive35i is now the best value on their lot. If you want/need an AWD I think its a no brainer within the brand, I think I may end up buying the damn thing and keeping the 128. Not a huge fan of the 6s but the N55 makes it more than livable. My comparably equipped 128 build is nearly 40, just 2k away from my X1 35i build. Adding AWD cost and you're basically getting the N55 for the price of the N52 plus room plus some other stuff I'm sure- bigger brakes, bluetooth, standard subs that got decontented few years ago... One diff- I put sport on 1er (it needs it for suspension), and went base line on X1. I think I can live w/o the sport seats for 1900 thanks.

I'd be one of those people: the turbo is more trouble than it's worth, in more ways than one... And I'm glad I got the NA6 before the turbo four got phased in.

Haha, figured that, just making sure. It will be sad news when the last one rolls off and my guess is one more model year.

The car's already a complexitron (Come on, no dipstick???)... And a turbo, HPFP, DI, et al, is a service advisor's dream.

My '09 128 6MT M-Sport has been a fun car to drive every single day (other then winter, when the beater Focus comes out).
As much as I would have to have Estoril Blue for my next 1/2 series, I could do with LeMans Blue quite nicely. As my 128 will be out of warranty 7/2013, maybe I should grab one more before it is no more. The 128 Sport/M-Sport 6MT is a supremely fun car to drive everyday, even to the market to pick up some milk and bread. The other car that I've owned that made me smile as much was my '83 GTI (first year in the States-should have kept it). The 128 6MT/Sport should be investigated by anyone looking for an affordable BMW driving experience. Next summer, maybe you can buy mine....It is as perfect as a three-year-old car can be, with extra oil changes, and detailed by my fussy standards : ) |

I wouldn't say "more trouble than it's worth" but certainly there is more that can go wrong compared to the N52.

Agree. Definitely more to go wrong and more expensive to fix when things do. And as to whether it's worth it, that's a very individual consideration. As I've followed this thread and thought all these things over I'm beginning to think I should have gotten the 128i instead of the 135i. I love the power of the 135i, but I rarely get to use it on this island. I used to laugh at guys out here buying ZR1s, 911s, and other expensive exotics that can't really be driven for what they are. Now I've gone and done sorta the same thing, albeit at a lower price point.

I consider myself a BMW purist: all I need is a normally aspirated six, rear wheel drive, two doors, sport seats, and a sports-tuned suspension and brakes... The rest is fluff. I'll probably never use the cruise control, auto headlights, auto wipers, etc... Those are just me-too gadgets that don't really contribute to the driving experience, IMO. The 128i NA6 might be the last pure BMW we'll ever see in America.
