I dont think the same rules apply. In stores, video can be used against you.

In this case, the video can be used as a part of a defence.

But that's just the way I think; based on no legal background.

But you made a good point, I will call the provincial cops and my insurance company tomorrow to get the information for the Quebec province.

I somehow doubt you'd be able to prove that he was trying to scam him. Since there is no audio the guy could claim that all he said was "dude you hit me, we should go through insurance since i'm a stand up gentleman".

You can tell that the car the camcorder was in was stationary. You can tell by the white lane marker on the left side.
Great idea to have one. Where can you get an F500Q?

I'm amazed you were so calm getting out of the car and talking to the scammer.

I'm in for a group buy if someone is arranging.

I just came here to post this video. Heres the aftermath:

"What happened at the end? Well, he called the cops because he thought that installing dash camera is illegal and told me I'm not allowed to do so. Obviously it's LEGAL! He also warned me not to hide the cam until the OPP arrives :P SURE y not! The OPP arrived and copied down all of our info but I told him I have footage that can prove everything. He refused to look at it because this is a minor accident. I showed the RAW footage to my insurance company and I'm 0% at fault. Let Karma do the rest."

Apparently this has been happening in Toronto a lot lately. I'd want the camera to run continuously, recording over itself until something actually happens and I can pop put the SD card. Also, maybe a way of it beginning to record upon startup, so I dont have to push a button every time.

The F500Q is actually the same one as the dealextreme link I posted (from my understanding). You can go on google images and search for F500Q and it has the same pictures. I guess Dealextreme has called it another name. The F500Q has many people raving about it from asia because of its good angle, quality and most of all the price

Can Someone find a camera that is both good for day and night. Has atleast 2-6 hours recording time and is HD quality with audio. I'd spend 100+ on it. Someone set up a GB.

The thing I don't like about the Dealextreme one is that its huge, and it can't be tilted horizontally. It would be ok if it partially fit behind the rear view mirror, but still.

This one is nice too.

I'm in for the GB as well. I always wanted to get one, after seeing OP's video, I don't think I should wait any longer. For those that has one, do you take it off everytime after you park? I'm just scared if I leave it there, thieves will smash my glass just to steal it.

I was just thinking...if you had not even told him about the camera, he'd be filing a false police statement which would be considered a misdemeanor offense and that'd be on his record. On top of that, I believe your insurance company can request him to be charged with insurance fraud?

You can report insurance fraud here: Insurance Bureau of Canada's insurance crime tips hotline 1-877-IBC-TIPS.

Btw, I ended up ordering two of these: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/35356. From the reviews, it seems like it'll work plus I can hardwire it to a 12V line in the car so it turns on automatically.

Oh and it is NOT illegal to have a camera in your car since it's considered a public space. I checked with Toronto Police on this a while ago already. In addition, with video evidence like this, if someone is being very aggressive and makes a dangerous move on the road, you can use that evidence to convict them of wreckless driving (you can report it on the Toronto Police website. They'll actually call you back in about 3 weeks and lay charges if you have enough evidence).

I do plan on having the words "CAMERA 1" and "CAMERA 2" in vinyl next to my camera. That way it'll at least keep the really angry tailgating drivers away from me maybe. A lot of store cameras post signs saying they have cameras when in reality only one of them works. You can buy fake cameras with blinking lights to make it look like they're actually working just to deter crime. (we're thinking about installing those in our condo since it works really well for a lot of buildings)

I ended up getting a dash cam after seeing vids and stories like this on other forums.

The one I decided on was the DOD GSE550.
http://www.dod-tec.com/product.php?cat_1st=4&cat_2nd=14

They had a US distribution site but it's hitting a godaddy redirect page right now so I'm not sure what's up. Anyway, it was $250 USD + S&H from the site but I bought it from an ebay seller for $250 USD who ships from within Canada and had free shipping so I only had to pay the HST.

The price is steep but the main reason I got it was because of the GPS logger and software that integrates it with windows media player and google maps so you can see your gps location as you play the clip. There's also an xyz graph that I think detects collisions. I figure I can leave this hidden in the arm rest if I need to get my car serviced and I can tell if it has been taken on a joyride

So far the unit has been worth it. Quality is good during the day and works ok at night. It's small enough that I can take it off and put it in my pocket after I park my car at work. I only have an 8GB card right now so it can only record about 2.5 hours before looping. It's fine for my commute to work but I may have to get a bigger card if I want to bring it on a road trip.

Some cons I've noticed so far are the timestamp and speed on the video are hard to read (recording at 1080p). Also, it is a bit bulky when mounting.. it doesn't fit directly behind the rear view mirror. Finally, the internal battery does not work unless the ac plug is in.

I'll try to post some clips later when I figure out how to work my video editor.

Keep safe out there.

I'm sure the vast majority of collision reports are knowingly filled out with false information by at least one person involved in an MVC.

This dash cam looks pretty good as i like the dual camera along with the GPS mapping. It does however seem kind of bulky and i don't like the adhesive mount because it seems too permanent. Anyone know of a smaller more concealable dual camera dash cam?
